Willpower or powerlessness? Empty Willpower or powerlessness?

Willpower.

Many believe that, in recovery from addiction, exercising willpower is the best way. To those recovering simply using ones will is not enough and can be counter productive. The knowledge that one cannot use substance(s) safely in any form, or any circumstances, simply isn't enough. Self knowledge fails us over and over again as just the one leads to yet another spree from which we emerge, not remembering what we did, where we went or who we met. Yet that does not stop us from repeating those same tragic events over and over. To those who have never experienced addiction for themselves, it does seem absurd to keep repeating those behaviours over and over, but unless the addict accepts that, where their substance of choice is concerned they are actually powerless, then little else can be done.
