A Disease Of The Mind And Body
To begin with an addict may use a substance because they like the effect produced by taking something. It changes the way they feel, makes them feel a part of life and helps them to be part of a group. It may help with confidence, provide a burst of energy, perhaps even numb the pain of physical or psychologial pain. With alcohol, it may be drunk while having dinner, as part of relaxation after finishing a day at work. There are many quite seemingly innocent and normal reasons for starting to use substances, but for some the obsession of addiction gradually takes over.
No one wakes up and decides today is the day that they will begin a journey of withdrawls, cravings, searching for supplies of their chosen drug, hoping that today they can beat the game and use moderately once more, perhaps even take it or leave it. At some point though the line is permanently crossed from moderate to heavy use and into addictive misuse, from where there is no return except for sobriety.
